Finding Inspiration

As a poet and novelist myself, I understand how one can succumb to writers block. This frame of mind often times comes when least expected. You'll usually be writing like a man possessed, words flowing to paper in a steady stream, your story taking shape beautifully... and then nothing.

...Silence of mind.
...Mental oblivion.

This is without a doubt the single most frustrating moment in any writer's life. It is a complete game stopper and feels like some great omnipotent being threw up a road block between your mind and your hand, stemming the flow of words.

Do not despair though my friends! You can break this mental block down if you think it through. It is simply a matter of seeking inspiration. Put down your pen or pencil, step away from the computer. It is time to venture out into reality. The real world. Try taking a walk and letting your thoughts roam free, maybe sit back and listen to a little music.

Still not working? Think back to what originally sparked your creative flame. What was the original inspiration that drove you to write your epic tale? Where were you, who were you with? Go back to that place and seek that moment where it all came together in your head. Don't force it though... Your readers can tell when you do. You need to let everything flow from you in it's own time.

Draw on your personal experiences when you need to. Always remember, anything you've been through in life, you are not alone in. We are all connected by our experiences and it is always a good idea to include those moments in your writings. This helps the reader make a connection with the literature and say to themselves, "I know exactly what that's like!".

If you still can't get those creative juices flowing, take a break from that project and work on something else. Vent some of your frustration with friends and family, they might be able to help. At the very least, you won't have all of that pent up frustration anymore. Just let it all go, it won't help you any, so why hold onto it?

Contributor's Note

All methods above are actually things that I do when confronted with writers block. It usually helps me through it and puts me back on track.
